Press Report – 14 July
On
Saturday 12 July, members of the Hillingdon Cycling Club travelled to
Oakley to assist in the promotion of two road races organised by one of
the club's successful road racing men, Scott Holmes who lives in the
village of Oakley. The day also included the traditional 'Village Day',
and although the temperature was lower than usual, hopes were high that
the rain would keep off.
Before the main road races, a Family Fun Ride was organised and
successfully run which attracted a great many youngsters and novices.
Peter Jones was the club's only entrant in the 6 lap race for 2nd and 3rd
category riders which attracted an entry of seventy. Unfortunately Peter
got blocked in the final sprint and had to be happy with 22nd place.
Although it was a very windy and showery Saturday afternoon, this did not
stop Graham Weeks recording a personal best time of 20.45 in the Antelope
Road Club's Open 10 mile time trial at Andover.
The
previous week Graham had entered the Eastern Counties 100 on Essex roads.
He was going well, but at 30 miles there was missing marshal and he went
off course. He managed to correct this by adding a further 10 miles to
his ride, and received a time of 4:52:39 for the 110 miles which he
considered good training.
Also on the same day Simon Williams rode the Dave Griffiths Memorial 60
Mile Road Race at Ottershaw. Weather conditions were bad with, strong
high winds and torrential rain. Simon managed to get away with some of the
breaks, but in a final sprint took 7th place.
The
road racing boys are competing regularly at the Hillingdon closed cycle
circuit every week and are securing some very useful placings. Peter
Jones was 2nd fastest at Milton Keynes 'King of the Bowl' race last
Tuesday. Peter also rides time trials and in the Agiscoviner 50 on the 13
July he 2.12.01.
