Message from our chairman
Hi everyone,
Christmas is closing in and there are some social events
coming up.
Firstly the Club Dinner date has been fixed for Friday 17th
February. A Saturday was preferred but the cost of the venue
is far greater for a Saturday night so make sure you can get
home early on the 17th for a 6.30 for 7.00 pm start at
Guidos Restaurant, Amersham, HP6 5LX. Tickets are on a first
come first serve basis, so after the great evening we had at
this restaurant last year make sure you get your booking in
as soon as possible. We have booked the whole restaurant and
65 places are available (last year we had 67). Please send a
deposit for £10.00 per ticket or whole amount of
£30.00/ticket to myself made payable to Hillingdon Cycling
Club (17 Rushmoor Avenue, Hazlemere, Bucks, HP15 7NT), you
can also contact me (01494 814770) Zita Pettitt (01895
630274) or Chris Holmes (0778 0844 958) for further
information. Tickets for the evening are great value for a
three course meal, a chance to see all the clubs trophies on
display, applaud the club champions, guest speaker, music
for dancing to finish with or retire to the quieter bar area
for a good old natter. Hope to see you all there ! Ahmen.
The next club training ride on Sunday 11th December shall be
a Christmas special finishing with turkey sandwiches and
mince pies. The meeting place is from our house (HP157NT)
leaving at 9.30am. Depending on who comes out I shall do a 2
hour loop back to the house followed by another hour for
those that want to. (Then those on the shorter ride can help
get the sandwiches ready!)
Finally, if I do not see you at any of the above, have a
great Christmas everybody, get those pedals spinning over
the winter months to keep the cobwebs off !
CHEERS !
Simon
The club open 25 has been and gone, thanks to all
those that helped out on the day and well done to Scott and
Graham as they won the team award.
Many thanks to Bill Gladwin who stepped in as timekeeper at
the very last minute as Jim Burgin is poorly at the moment.
On behalf of the club I would like to wish Jim a speedy
recovery. Jim has been a timekeeper for 52 years and has
also been timekeeper for every Hillingdon CC open event. Jim
has never missed an event in all that time, what an
exceptional record that is. So get well quick Jim and we
look forward to seeing you out and about soon.
The racing season is over now (for me anyway) and we move
into the social season. The Hillingdon CC have the Christmas
club run coming up not too many weeks away and then the Club
Dinner to look forward to in the New Year.(Both dates to be
finalised and will appear on the web site ASAP)
The first event of the off season is on Saturday 12th
November, the Bike Jumble at Chalfont St Peter Epilepsy
Centre. This is a great event that our Connie has an
affinity with, helping out, organising and managing a team
of Hillingdon members to man the charity stall. The jumble
is for anything to do with cycling, old or new bike bits,
clothing, books, magazines, memorabilia, complete bikes you
name it. Punters can hire a table and sell old bits or
donate their unwanted belongings to the Charities stall.
Anything sold on this stall goes directly to the Epilepsy
Charity and we, the Hillingdon man the stall. So, if you
would a) like to help on the day please let Connie or myself
know or b) if you have got any unwanted bits lying around in
the garage or shed what better way to get rid of them
knowing that it will make a few quid for the centre. I am
willing to collect it, so phone, mail or text me to arrange
pick up etc. Full details of the Jumble are on the club
website `latest news` section. (Incidentally the `Simon` on
there is not me that is the organiser of the event).
Finally, there was to be a club newsletter produced
advertising this event and having all second half of the
season race results etc, but due to Jim not being well this
will be delayed. So if you know and have contact with those
not on email please print this off or pick up the phone and
let them know what’s going on.
Cheers for now and hope to see some of you at some of the
above and all of you at the Club Dinner.
Regards
Simon

2011 News
First of all please accept my apologies for lack of
Hillingdon Cycling Club's news so far this season, the
reason being we have a different system of dealing with
members times and placings in both time trials and road
races. Club coach, Scott Holmes now accumulates all these
facts and displays them on the Club's website.
I have carried out the position of Press Secretary since
1974 - 37 years ago, and at the club's Annual General
Meeting on Monday 19th July I decided to retire from this
post. In the past I have had a very good rapport with both
the Bucks Advertiser and Uxbridge Gazette's Sports Editors,
and found them both very helpful in promoting the Hillingdon
Cycling Club's activities.
However, times have changed and in future Scott Holmes will
e-mail you with the relevant news from time to time. In case
you would like to contact him his e-mail address is:
holmengineering@talktalk.net
With many thanks for all your help in the past and hope you
will continue to print our news.

Club Dinner 2011
It was a great evening last Friday for members and friends
of the Hillingdon Cycling Club when they gathered at Guidos Restaurant,
Amersham for the Club's Annual Dinner and Prize Presentation which was
organised by Club Chairman, Simon Williams.
Guests of honour were the Three Mann Brothers, Nick, Collin & Steve, of the
Bath Road Club who each in turn gave interesting and amusing speeches.
Response was made by President, Mrs Connie May of Chalfont St Peter who also
welcomed the many visitors including Angela and Eddy Williams (Simon
Williams's parents) who had travelled from Cornwall, Jenny and Brian Wright,
Willesden Cycling Club, former members Sue Reed and Neil Broad who actualy
won the Club Junior Championship in 1981 and the next year, 1982 won the
senior Best Allrounder Championship. Well known time keekers Marian and Mike
Fountain of Didcox Phoenix, and top road racing stars Paul Crook who won the
Club's Open Road Race at Oakley in July, Colin Roshier and Olympic
representative Harry Lodge.
At the end of her speech, Connie May presented the prestigious Presidents
Cup to her husband Roy in recognition of his services to the Club over the
years. She also thanked the many members for all their support they had
given
Unfortunately for the first time in the club's history no one had qualified
for the Best All rounder Championship or the Veterans Best All rounder
Championship. Last year's club champion, Graham Weeks whose racing in 2010
was limited owing to him moving to France only managed to win the short
distance championship. It would seem road racing has proved more popular
with members over the last few years; the club now has some very strong and
successful riders in this category.

Denise Mann & Connie May.
Denise presented the prizes to: Simon Williams who won the Veterans Road
Race Championship while Scott Holmes won the Open Road Race Championship and
also the Club and Veterans' 25 Mile Time Trial Championship Cups . His wife
Helen received the cup for the fastest ladies 10 mile time of the year and
their son, 12 year old Gregory received the trophy for the fastest schoolboy
riding 10 miles - what you call, "a family affair"! Paul Egan received the
John Sumner Shield for 1st Handicap in the Championship 25 Mile Time Trial.
Brian Major again took the Club Runs Attendance and the Marshalling Cups.
Visitor Jenny Wright received the Ladies 10 Mile Invitation Cup and Dave
Rowe the Jim Brooks Award for winning first handicap in the Club's 10 Mile
Championship. Connie May received the Ladies 10 Mile Championship Cup. New
member Alexey received the Consolation Cup while Peter Jones was awarded the
Club Man of the Year Cup.
her as she approaches the end of her four year in office as Club President.
With many thanks for your help.

Yvonne McGregor and Roy May
On Saturday, 5th February Roy May of the Hillingdon Cycling Club attended
the National Veterans; Time Trialling Association's Annual General Meeting
and Prize Presentation in Birmingham as he was nominated to receive the
special Ted Brickwell Trophy in recognition for all the work he did in
promoting 10 and 25 Mile Time Trials on behalf of the London and Home
Counties Group for the last 20 years. The presentation was made by Yvonne
McGregor MBE who was World and Olympic Bronze Medallist in 2000. Roy was
recently elected as Chairman of the London & Home Counties Group. Also at
this special event was another Hillingdon Cycling Club member, Jim Burgin
who already acts as Editor of the Association's National magazine. During
the meeting, Jim was duly elected Chairman of the National committee
With many thanks for your help and co-operation.

Chairman’s Report 2010
Well another season passes us by, and a pretty successful
year for the Hillingdon Cycling Club.
Highlights are Duncan winning the LVRC `B` category
Criterium Championship at a closed circuit in Deal near
Dover, Duncan also won the Railsport Championships which is
incorporated in our Club Road Race organised by Scott and
helpers from Oakley Village. Scott was third in the LVRC
Road Race Championships and has been performing consistently
well in British Cycling events throughout the year
Also the Hillingdon road racing vets had some strong
performances in the Minet Park Veterans races held every
other Wednesday throughout the summer with plenty of podium
finishes in all age categories entered. Peter, who has raced
this year with no real training, always amazes me, he still
managed to pull off some wins in his age category events and
rode strongly with Andy and Graham Weeks to help the team in
Minet Park Vet events. Me, well I am lying fourth overall in
the Mstina Vets Road Race series, a season long competition
over 9 events, with one more race to go I hope to keep that
fourth place or better still get on the podium for third.
The club has even had teams riding in Sportive Events around
the country including the now famous Dragon Sportive held in
Wales. Five club riders entered and completed this extremely
challenging event.
A number of club training rides started from Scott & Helens,
with enjoyable rides of up to 80 miles on quiet
Oxfordshire/Buckinghamshire roads. These rides will be
increased through the forthcoming winter with rides being
organised by any club member from their house, or a chosen
central location. Contact Scott to arrange a suitable Sunday
and the Club Website to find out where and when these rides
will take place.
The Club Dinner has a change of venue for 2011. Guidos
Italian Restaurant, Amersham on the Hill. We have sole use
of the restaurant and bar for the evening. The owner (Guido)
is a very keen cyclist and has a number signed Jerseys he
will display on the night, one in particular is a Yellow
Jersey signed by Lance Armstrong. The menu is to be
finalised but will consist of a starter, main course (veggie
alternative) with a dessert from the sweet trolley. Cost is
£30.00 per head and will be significantly better value than
the golf club. So get your booking in quick with Zita or
myself as places are limited. The date is Friday 18th
February 2011.
The club open 25 has been and gone. Entries were
considerably down this year with only 42 entries. This due
to changing the course to the Amersham Road. As an event
organiser I feel the ski slope is becoming increasingly more
dangerous not only for riders but even putting up and taking
down directional signs around the course no matter what time
of day is risky. The Amersham Road is a much more compact
course, noticeably quieter and less marshals are required.
So it was good this year that I did not have to rely on the
usual marshalling gang, as the `younger` members filled most
of the positions. Thanks to all those that helped out, the
event went well with some positive feedback from riders and
as some fast times were recorded the word should get round
the time trialling scene, so hopefully more entries next
year.
Looking ahead to next year I am pleased to report that the
clubs sponsors of Fit4Life, The Upholstery Workshop, Swift
Electrical & Holm Engineering have pledged their support for
2011 so thanks very much to them. With sponsorship funds,
Scott has completed his level 1 coaching course and there
are ideas in the pipeline to perhaps attract some Juniors
into the club by offering `squad` training sessions.
Also, next year Scott, Paul and Andy are going to
concentrate on Time Trialling, new bikes, disc wheels and
aero bars are the main discussions at present, will any club
records be broken ?
Until next time, hope to see you either on a club ride or if
not, definitely at the dinner in February.
Simon
HCC MEETING 28TH March 2010
Welcome to new members of the committee. Graham comes back.
Simon – New start of the club, not so much meetings and
paperwork. More realistic.
Still keep a record of meetings.
Absence – Stuart Coulter
Connie – Black spot
January minutes. All agreed,
Reports:
Road Race - Peter Jones – 6 members new from 3.2.10. First
race sat all good finishes, at Hillingdon circuit. Possibly
contact Alex Marfit and son for Road Racing.
Treasurer – Bill £2529.05 in the HCC account. A couple of
queries to sort with Jim Burgin. Speak to Jim re sponsorship
money to give receipt for the sponsor’s. Chase up Jim for
monies from outstanding people not paid from dinner and
check raffle money from the dinner.
Members Secretary – Mountain bike – track sec nothing to
report.
Matters arising: AGM needed a time trial sec, we need to
promote the West London combine event, need to get an
organiser for the event, to get start sheet and take numbers
and marshals. Suggested to have a HQ. May 30th is the date.
This is also the National Championships and the time trail
25 national. Graham to organise event and marshals,(thank
you). Graham to make contact and discuss event.
Affiliations £200.00 WLC – WLCA – CTT and BC if they are
still necessary? To confirm with Jim if these are all the
same still and payments made. Please confirm who we are
affiliated to from Jim in writing.
Simon to find out about what insurance is offered from CTT
and BC for members? It would be a good to mention to new
members they will know what they are covered for.
Delegates: Peter BC – sent info. CTT - Jim ? WCA - Jim ?
WLC- Graham to be posted as the Hillingdon delegate.
Other matters:
Scott - How to enter a Time Trial event to be put on the
website for others to understand. It is difficult to enter
the event. For the West London Combine event contact Graham
on the website. For open events contact CTT website and
enter on line or have contacts.
Scott is going to add to website Bicester TT event.
Wednesday at the circuit time trail to add to website, run
by the Westerly, 7.15pm.
Also helps to encourage new members into racing and events
in cycling.
Money in the club: Utilise the money in a productive way for
Coaching. Equipment for coaching, on a Go Ride event. Will
need to purchase some equipment for this.
Purchase road race numbers suggested – so the club can have
their own set. Investigate a price and confirm with Simon
and purchase numbers.
Club Kit – Keeping a stock of kit in the club. Maybe the
club could purchase some items to keep stock. As a
possibility, as it is difficult when the order is taking 6
weeks. We can then offer a new member kit as soon as they
join. Leave as it is at the moment but the club to discuss
the possibility to have stock in the club.
Peter mentioned about applying for grants for extra things
for the club. BC, CTT, Sport for England. For Coaching,
advertising, cones, stop watches, camera for finish line
etc.
Scott and Helen to make some calls and investigations.
Graham – First evening 10 coaching on the circuit prime
coaching. 15th April 2010 on the track for 6.15pm. Graham
won a competition for map reading Thursday riding and
cycling on an orienteering event for 2 hours, in the rain
and hail stones. The prize was a hologram trophy and a
bottle of wine. Possible Trophy for the club?
Club Dinner and Dance:
Simon showed a map for distance of members to get to the
different possibilities. Showing how many are around each
area of access. 27 miles to one of the suggestions; some
feel that it is too far to travel. Possibilities;
Beaconsfield to be more accessible to new members. There
needs to be a venue for all members to reach. Peter’s
friends also taken into consideration as they have been
supportive in the past.
Zeta impressed with the Sandy Lodge GC, need a refundable
deposit of £200. refundable amount £100. The price quoted is
£450 + vat. But Bill Slade (Helen’s Dad) can organise a
discount for this. Zeta to contact the club for menu, £23 -
£25 for a 3 course meal.
Provisional date booked 22nd January 2011.
Scott to organise music and sound system.
Guido’s , Italian food.
Peter Jones and Simon visited the venue. Needs 50 – 60 heads
for the dinner if it was at this venue to have the whole
event. Need to find out if people are happy to go this venue
because of distance. Cost £26 per head, one choice of menu.
£26.50 for 3 choices. £30 for steak as an option.
Food will be better and owner a cyclist and very interested.
Simon showed the map of the venue, (very well drawn)! Music
would need to be organised.
Feeling is that this venue will be more dynamic and new for
the clubs new image. Different from having a golf club
again, maybe next year for Sandy Lodge?
Members decided on Guido’s as the venue.
Brunel was discarded due to venue not being suitable.
Possible another event in the summer for the club to meet up
– Helen to organise.
Dinner Speakers – Zeta suggested Nick Mann.
But their club have a 150 year celebration Simon to contact
to see if date clashes with our dinner. And let Zeta know.
Simon’s suggestion – Bill Banister.
End of Feb, trying for 22nd January or Mid February.
Zeta to organise event still.
Graham and Zeta email address ZL_pettitt@hotmail.co.uk
Meetings: At each meeting events are organised and people
chosen for positions. All could be done via email etc.
Meeting in January for dinner etc, do agenda for AGM. One in
March, early July (Suggestion that we meet for a social
event at a restaurant and meet up after minute park in
between. A November meeting, then AGM in Feb. These meetings
to be held in different people’s houses.
Please can Simon send Scott all the email addresses of every
member. And addresses of people who do not have a email
address so we can contact them.
Scott to send Jim sheet with the details of events from
website for Jim to print for those with out a computer.
Peter’s house in November for the next meeting date to be
confirmed.
January - Graham and Zeta
July - Circuit Minute Park
Fin.
Think we should get this off pretty quickly as at the moment
everyone in the club thinks the championship 25 is on the
30th May and entry date is fast approaching !!
Club Championship 25 Date Change
Due to the club promotion of the WLC 25 on the 30th May,
where we are to provide marshals etc. The Club Championship
will be run in the WLC 25 on the 5th September.

Helen
Holmes - Secretary Hillingdon Cycling Club.
Hi
all, thought I would tell you a bit about me so you can feel
like you know me a bit better.
I
have been involved in the Hillingdon Cycle Club for many
years but in the role of No.1 fan of my wonderful husband
Scott, obviously supporting him and all his success. I
am a very proud wife and enjoy the excitement of the road
racing scene, epically if Mark Cavendish is involved, and
Scott of course!
For
my day job, I am a Tutor and coach for the fitness industry.
Mainly in the Indoor cycling world. I am the UK Master Trainer for Keiser UK, who make air resistance fitness
equipment, magnetic cross trainers and amazing magnetic
spin bikes which read Watts
and Heart Rates. Traveling around the country teaching
instructors how to teach is a real passion for me and has
evolved my passion for cycling to your world of cycling
(outdoors). I am hoping to enter some time trails this
year, bad knee depending, but watch this space! I also
assist with the V02 Fitness assessments we run and teach
around 10 cycle classes a week, as well as running the
house, organizing children and a dog.
A
busy life.
I
have two wonderful children, Emily and Gregory, or is that
three if we include Scott! I love where we live in
Oakley, it has really changed our lives for the better and
given us a great quality of life.
I
have been accepted as the new Secretary for Hillingdon
Cycling Club and will do my very best in this important
role. I look forward to helping with the future growth
and development of Hillingdon CC.
Helen Holmes
Hi there - Herewith is our latest report:
Saturday was a busy day for Hillingdon Cycling Club members
when some of them attended the Veterans' Time Trialling
Association's Annual Lunch and prize presentation at
Aldenham Golf and Country Club, Aldenham. The club's
champion for 2009 Graham Weeks who cycled from his home in
Ascot to the venue was one of the prize recipients.
Afterwards, he was back on his bike cycling to the Uxbridge
Golf Club arriving in good time to attend the Club's 43rd
Annual Dinner, Prize Presentation and Disco.
Mr Doug Collins, a cycle racing star of the 1950's and
1960's and now a top road racing commissaire gave a very
interesting speech and proposed the toast to the club. Mrs
Connie May, Club President of Chalfont St Peter responded
and welcomed all the visitors. During her speech she
presented the prestigious President's Cup to Simon Williams
of Hazlemere for his special contribution in the running of
the club during 2009.

Mr Doug Collins presented prizes to Graham Weeks the main
prize winner taking the club championship over a distance of
25, 50 and 100 miles with an average speed of 25.066 mph. He
also won the Short Distance Championship over 10 and 25
miles with an average speed of 27.846 mph. He also won cups
for being fastest at 10, 25, 50 and 100 miles as well as
winning the John Sumner Memorial trophy. Peter Jones of
Jordans received the Veterans; Road Race Cup while Scott
Holmes took the Club Road Race Cup. Graham Pettitt won the
Evening Points competition; the Best Improvement Short
Distrance Championship and tied with Graham Weeks for the
Ken Cumpper Memorial Shield. Brian Major retained the Club
Runs and Marshalling Trophies. Connie May won the Ladies 10
Mile Championship and fastest ladies 10 mile cups. Clubman
of the Year Cup went to Philip Burgin. The Jim Brooks
Memorial Award. awarded for the first time to winner of 1st
handicap in the Championship 10 miles was won by Peter
Cross. The Consolation Cup went to Cecil Hambelton, he
celebrated his 80th birthday in September by competing in
the West London Cycling Association's 10 Mile Time Trial
making him the eldest member ever to enter and race for the
Hillingdon Cycling Club.

Members of the Hillingdon Cycling Club are looking forward
to 2010 as a sponsored club. They have a new coach in Scott
Holmes who has already started his special training days and
fitness classes, full details can be seen on the Club's
website. Members will now be seen riding in new club colours
of black, red and white.
