Killer sprint.

Yesterdays 25 !!! after 2 miles
I realised why I don’t time trial anymore…there F#$#in hard
!!!
Cold drizzly rain and windy, really fast to the turn, but
got caught by some old boy with disc wheel, low profile etc,
he flew past me in a massive gear, I was on the hoods
twiddling (need to ride some bigger gears) that demoralised
me. Finished with a 1.05.14. Disappointed, but I did not
ride in my limits as I was on for a big ride straight after
in prep for the Divs & Dragon ride. Nevertheless I did try
and my glutes were pretty sore afterwards. Took me 10 miles
to get the buttocks feeling loose again after the race.
Total mileage for the day…85, so a good day really.
Tony Gibb won it with a short 53, great ride, the last 2
miles were into the wind with a nasty long drag, I didn’t
get over 18mph !!!
Time trialling over for the next 20 years !!! Simon Williams
After the spring like weather
of late, It was a shock to the system for members of the
Hillingdon Cycling Club when they turned out to help club
mate Cecil Hambleton promote a 10 mile time trial on behalf
of the Veterans' Time Trialling Association's, London & Home
Counties Group on the Maidenhead/Marlow course on Bank
Holiday Monday, the. weather turning quite wintry with heavy
showers throughout the event. The club had two
representatives taking part, Graham Pettitt who clocked
25.39 and Bill Gladwin 31.50.
On Saturday afternoon Cecil was himself in action when he
rode in the West London Cycling Association's 10 Mile Time
Trial at Newbury and clocked 30.31.
The previous Saturday saw Graham Weeks ride the Newbury
Cycling Club's open 25 mile time trial and did extremely
well to record a super time of 56.49. Bill Gladwin also rode
and clocked 1.17.20.

A Brief History of Time (Trialling)
Hi, I’m Graham Weeks and I have been time trialling on and
off for some thirty five years. Time Trialling is a race
against the clock. Riders set out at minute intervals on an
out and back road course (usually). The quickest time wins.
Time trialling is known by our continental counterparts as
the ‘race of truth’. In time trialling or testing there are
no wheel suckers, no tactics (usually) just a flat out VO²
max blast. The standard testing distances are 10 miles; 25
miles; 50 miles; 100 miles and as far as you can go in 12
(yes read and weep) 12 hours.
Many time trials take place each week around this area
including Bucks, Berks, Surrey, Herts, etc. ‘Open events’
take place mainly on Saturdays and Sundays and ‘enter on the
line’ club events mainly mid week evenings.
There is a wealth of history and experience of testing in
the Hillingdon Cycle Club and new members can tap into a
wealth of information, tips and training help; just ask me.

A Christmas Tale
Ours is a singular esoteric sport, I know not why we shave
our legs or not shave our face before a time trial, although
I do.When I was young I scoffed at the etiquettes and
traditions of cycling; now I truly love and embrace these
idiosyncrasies. One of my favourite cycling institutions is
the Boxing Day 10.
This year I cycled out to Maidenhead Thicket on my winter
bike complete with mudguards, lights, festooned in tinsel
and me sporting a rather good Father Christmas hat.
You have probably noticed that our sport is not solely
occupied by cyclists anymore, we now share our sport with
triathletes, duo athletes, sportif riders and the like,
these people and a good lot they are, do not always
understand our ways and stared wide eyed at the Santa’s,
Reindeer clad bikies etc.
Mind you two testers rather let the side down by turning up
with full on how yer father carbon low pros’ with disc
wheels and all the bells and whistles. I don’t know about
you but I almost think that sort of behaviour on the
hallowed Boxing Day 10 is bordering on cheating.
Anyway this is what I wanted to tell you. As I am waiting to
go a lady triathlete in front of me refuses to be held by
the pusher off, the time keeper gives the customary ‘thirty
seconds’ to go followed by ‘fifteen seconds’ then he begins
the count down
Five
Four
Three
The lady scoots off into the distance, we testers are
aghast!, astonished looks are exchanged between the
gathered, but this is the best bit, the timekeeper does not
miss a beat, the carries on totally unfazed
Two
One
Gone
His total sangfroid had me absolutely creased up and I was
still laughing when it was my turn.
I trolled round, caught two Santa’s and one reindeer and
throughly enjoyed myself. I managed a 26.40 (only beaten by
the two low pros) and rode home a happy bunny after a sherry
and two mince pies.

Report on the Bike jumble held on the 14th November 2009
Roy and I were very sorry to have missed attending the Bike
Jumble this year, although we did a little bit to help
before we went on holiday to Tenerife on the 10th, and we
did think about everyone helping, especially when we heard
England were having atrocious weather while we were enjoying
warm sunshine and light evenings. My ex colleague, Simon
Ekless who is now in charge of fundraising for the charity
PACE had sent me an e-mail for our return with details of
the event. Apparently in spite of the bad weather, a record
number of persons attended. All the tables had been booked
before the big day. Simon was very grateful for the help he
received from:
Brenda and Tony Norris who collected the entrance money at
the door raised £335.65.
The Stall responsible for the selling of bikes and anything
bike related, including clothing made £653.00 which was
manned by Chief salesman Pete Cross with Pete Hoare, Brian
Harris, Simon Williams and Brian Major..
In spite of the Catering running out of bacon for the famous
bacon butties by 11 o'clock, an amount of £275.60 was made.
Beryl Brooks was a very useful member of this team and she
even had time to buy herself a new bike as well.
Money raised from the hire of tables came to a total of
£460.00
Therefore, a grand total of £1,724.25 was raised.
Simon has particularly asked me to convey his sincere thanks
to all the above - he said he could not have managed without
you, and has asked me to tell you that the Recreation Hall
has already been booked for the 13th November 2010. Roy and
I have made a special note of this. For those who have never
attended one of the bike jumbles, it’s a lovely social event
meeting up with lots of people from other clubs. It’s also a
good way of selling off all those unwanted bike bits so why
not have a good sort out and hire a table next year. Cecil
did just that and he was very pleased with the result.
Another interesting note Simon told me is that since Roy and
I have been helping with bike jumbles for the last eight
years £13,500 has been raised. Not bad eh!

Delysia (Del) Hambelton
28.12.1934 – 13.08.2009
Del became ill some time
ago and tragically passed away on Thursday the 13th of August.
Cecil and Del married in
1955 and it was a partnership of joint interests, both were members of the
Ealing Paragon CC. Del, having joined the club at 16, was Runs Captain at
18.
From then on she not only
rode the bike along with Cecil and the Ealing Paragon but contributed hugely
to the furtherance of the pastime. Del was the treasurer of the South West
London Ladies’ Association and a committee member of the Ladies’ Road
Records Association. For ten years she was treasurer of the VTTA London and
Home Counties Group.
On joining the Hillingdon
in 1976, Del took up timekeeping club events and readily helped the club’s
coaches with transport and refreshments on training weekends. Latterly she
became a familiar figure at the end of the telephone at event headquarters
as she received results from Cecil at the finish.
Along with the demands of
her administrative posts, Del was the VTTA London and Home Counties BAR
Champion in 1994 and she won the club’s Ladies’ Invitation 10 on no less
than three occasions.
Both she and Cecil took
over the running of the Fellowship of West London Cyclists: Cecil as
Secretary and Del as Treasurer, taking it through a sticky patch to its
present place in the cyclists’ potpourri of nostalgic groups.
The club’s sincere
condolences go out to Cecil, Julie, Sara and Mark at the sad loss of a
devoted and much loved wife and mother.
The funeral which took
place at Breakspear Crematorium on Wednesday the 2nd of September was
attended by many friends from the cycling world who joined in the moving
tributes and memories.
